Frequent dandruff influences hair loss. It is normal for skin cells to die and flake off; a small amount of flaking is normal and common. Dandruff is shedding of dry cells from the scalp which is often triggered by frequent exposure to extreme heat and cold. Scientific evidences have shown that fungus does play a role in causing dandruff. Approximately 45% of human population suffers from the problem of dandruff at any point of time. The problem can be very unsightly, which makes it an embarrassment, causes emotional distress. Most of the sufferers avoid wearing dark clothes as the presence of white flakes often becomes a cause of embarrassment in public and thus can affect a person’s social life.
How can it be prevented?
Do not scratch your scalp or use combs etc. to pick the scalp. Using any such tools will often worsen the scenario. The scalp is very sensitive; the hair products that you use can also irritate the scalp. Avoid using blow dryers.
Diet plays an important role. Make sure your diet contains vitamins E, B6 and B12, selenium and zinc. Flaxseed oil and oily fish also said to help prevent dandruff as they are rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids. Red meat like Mutton, Beef and pork should be consumed in moderation.
When should I see a Doctor?
If your scalp isn't getting better with these recommendations, or if it's red, inflamed or painful, then you must see your doctor to get it examined and treated.
